Peppermint Essential Oil

4 - Peppermint

Today’s featured oil is PEPPERMINT!! This is an amazing oil because of it’s many uses!!  A few ways we use it:

  • For times when we need a little support for our digestive system after indulging too much or eating something that our system wasn’t happy with. We apply a drop over our tummy; I suggest you use your non-dominant hand in an attempt to avoid rubbing it your eyes afterword (if you do manage to get in in your eyes or in the sensitive area around your nose, simply apply a drop of carrier oil to stop the hot sensation).
  • To give a boost of energy if we feel like we are tired and sluggish; just sniff this oil from the bottle or putting a drop on the back of the neck for a little pick-me-up!!!
  • I also love to add Peppermint Vitality oil to a batch of brownies to make them even more special (4-5 drops to a 9×9 batch of brownies, 8-10 drops to a 9×13 batch)!  It is also yummy to add a drop to hot chocolate!!!

I have never tried the suggestion of putting a drop on your thumb and pressing it to the roof of your mouth!!  I’m sure it would help to keep your sinuses open!  😉

Why Essential Oils Work

The specific mechanics of the sense of smell are still being explored by scientists, but have been described as working like a lock and key, or an odor molecule fitting a specific receptor.

The sense of smell is the only one of the five senses directly linked to the Limbic Lobe of the brain, the emotional control center. So, why does a smell have the power to do that? Well, first we need to understand how God created our brain and how our emotions work. The Limbic System supports a variety of functions including emotion, behavior, motivation, long-term memory, and olfaction. Emotional life is largely housed in the Limbic System, and it has a great deal to do with the formation of memories. The only way to reach the Limbic System, is through the olfactory nerve, which goes up through our nose, and is why an aroma has the ability to affect our emotions. That is why when you smell a familiar aroma, it takes you back to memories decades ago. The scent of a special fragrance can evoke memories and emotions before we are even consciously aware of it. When a smell is concerned, we react first and think later. All other senses (touch, taste, hearing, and sight) are routed through the thalamus, which acts as the switchboard for the brain, passing stimuli onto the cerebral cortex (the conscious thought center) and other parts of the brain.

The Limbic Lobe (a group of brain structures that includes the hippocampus and amygdala, located below the cerebral cortex) can also directly activate the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is one of the most important parts of the brain. It controls temperature, hunger, thirst, fatigue, sleep, and circadian cycles.

Essential oils, through their fragrance and unique molecule structure, can directly stimulate the Limbic Lobe, and the hypothalamus, which is responsive to olfactory stimuli. Not only can inhalation of essential oils be used to combat stress associated with daily life, but it may stimulate much deeper areas of the brains normal functions. That is how powerful essential oils are, and how powerful a scent is. This is the way God created our brains to function.

Rose Essential Oil

2 - Rose

In honor of the Rose Bowl Parade today, I will feature Rose essential oil.  Pure, therapeutic grade Rose essential oil is steam distilled from the flowers (in a 2-part process); approx. 22 pounds of rose petals are distilled for every 5-ml bottle of Young Living Rose essential oil produced! That’s a lot of flowers!!!  For this reason this it is a very expensive oil!  (If you find an inexpensive bottle of Rose oil or Rose absolute, I would research the company that made it to be sure you are getting pure oil and not something that was distilled with chemicals AND/OR that has been diluted with lesser quality oils.  It’s sad but it really does happen! :-/ )

If you are ever blessed enough to own a bottle of Rose essential oil, it is very relaxing and is amazing for supporting your skin.  Rose has a beautiful aroma that encourages feelings of positive self-reflection.
